Abandoned Skate Arena

Exploring an abandoned roller skating rink in Red Hills, Queensland. The Skate Arena had been up and running since the 1920’s until it was destroyed by fire in 2002. Since then what remains of the roof is collapsing, weeds are climbing through the remains and it appears to have seen it’s fair share of graffiti artists.

With roller skates and wheels still lying around the site, it was an eerie feeling quietly exploring the rink. I loved every minute of it!

Great pics and great memento, even if noone loves it enough to care for it any more. BTW the suburb is Red Hill 🙂

I need to get in there. I used to train at Skate Arena, Red Hill. Seeing it like this is heartbreaking.

Hi Emma, As a past competition dance skater myself there also from Skate Arena Redhill Club, I saw your posting here and thought I’d say I can well can relate with you Emma. I wasn’t sure if you were training there when I was at the Skate Arena Artistic club? I also used to train and compete in the state & National titles with dance competition skating there between 1980 to early 1990’s?

I eventually went over to train with John & Rae Davis at Rollercade at the Clevlend Skating Rink and Artistic Club. I was specialising and competing in dance skating and being taught by Ron Irving originally at Redhill – Skate Arena for 7 years. I well remember his two sons who also coached being Gary and Paul Irving.

As you know the amazing history of Skate Arena back then in it’s Awesome days!… Redhill ‘Skate Arena’ Artistic Club produced some really outstanding dancers both in Australia and Overseas at the World Championships each year back then and personally I was really lucky to be dancing and training with the fellow dancers back at that amazing time for artistic dance skating. Now I do competition ballroom dancing in standard and New Vogue dancing on a National Open level to this day! Except now with suede sole shoes with a national partner, instead of roller skates!

Just thought to connect with you as an avid, fellow dancer skater as well and member of the past Redhill Skate Arena Club. Agree, unfortunately very sad indeed for what’s happened to such a historical skating club when Ron Irving was alive and coaching quite strongly at the time with his two sons in some of Australia’s top achievement dance skating history from Queensland.
