I never thought I’d see a sea lion playing in the waves at Ballina. But I did, and I have the photos to prove it!

Yesterday morning, I spotted this guy on the shore of Patches Beach. The local fishermen said that he had been playing in the waves all morning. He was loving it – diving around in the shallow breaks, swimming along with just a fin out of water, then standing his tail high in the air… I was sure this guy had escaped from Sea World.

After tweeting out the discovery, I got a reply from Keith Williams, from the Australian Seabird Rescue who told me that it looked like 9 month old Australian Sea Lion who might have got kicked out of his colony (so not a Sea World escapee).

Here are some photos taken. Not the sharpest photos, but I only had my 50mm prime lens… I wasn’t prepared for photographing Sea Lions that morning.

They all look good to me, dude! Did he let you pat him?

Thanks man. I stripped my shoes off to get in closer to him (zooming with my feet) and my red hair must have scared him back into the ocean.
